Hi Everybody,
This past Fall I decided to plant a vegetable garden. It wasn’t the first time I’d planted a garden, but it had been a few years since I had planted one from seed. I already had a small successful-ish garden that was planted with plants from the store. Anyway it was a fun project.
So I ordered some seeds from online, several different types of vegetables that I’d researched to make sure they were good for my planting zone, I’m in zone 9. Then I mapped out where I would plant each type of seed to make sure they liked their neighbor. After that I planted the seeds in the newly built garden box, watered them, and watched them grow.
Truthfully I probably wasn’t as consistent with watering as I should have been, and I didn’t thin the beets or carrots soon enough for them to continue their growth before the bunnies got to them. So, some of the vegetables didn’t even come up, and the ones that did were really cool to watch grow for a while, but like I said the bunnies got to them, multiple times. The biggest carrot I saw was about an inch long, and that’s stretching it. My sister picked it, replanted it, and then my dad picked it and ate it.
Nevertheless, I have decided to try my hand at vegetable gardening again, with seeds I have leftover from the Fall planting. Our Winter weather in zone 9 is pretty mild, although it seems super cold to me whenever it gets into the 60’s. I’m going to plant only the vegetables that actually came up, but I’m going to plant more of them.
I mapped out what it’s going to look like. Basically it’s the plan I had before I just eliminated the plants that didn’t come up, and added more rows of the ones that did sprout. The garden box is 8ft. long and 2ft. wide. My plan is to plant 2 long rows each of Kale, Cauliflower, Broccoli, and Beets. Then plant 6 rows of Carrots perpendicular to the other rows. Stay tuned for updates and pictures of how it looks, how it is growing, and how to do it yourself. Till Later!
